HWCDSB extends ThoughtExchange survey until Wed, May 12
“While teachers throughout this pandemic have been amazing, the mandated amount of synchronous screen time is not healthy or developmentally appropriate for any child. Children should not have this much screen time. Ever. It is not effective.”
As the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School continues to collect feedback from parents/guardians, staff and community members through ThoughtExchange, that “thought” – at 4.5 stars – has so far generated the greatest response and the most support.
Other top thoughts follow a similar theme.
“Expectations for the amount of synchronous time does not align with children’s developmental stages. A primary student should not be on the computer for the same amount of time as a secondary student,” shared a staff member.
“I know that the kids will only learn and be engaged if I am well-planned enthusiastic, but I am so burnt out,” wrote an exhausted teacher, who is also suffering from too much time at the computer.
Then there’s the social aspect of in-person learning. “I believe kids need interaction with other kids,” noted a parent.
The ThoughtExchange was launched on May 3 to glean from parents/guardians and staff what has worked well, what have been the greatest challenges and what the HWCDSB can do to further support student faith formation, well-being and learning.
To date 794 individuals from 3 participant groups have taken part in the survey, generating 1,406 thoughts and rating 28,260 thoughts from others.
Thoughts have run the gamut – from the burden to families with two working parents to the stress on secondary students preparing for university, and the need for more mental health supports.
Feedback from the ThoughtExchange will inform best practices and help the board to continue to support students and families, respond to student learning needs and improve learning outcomes. Participate until Wednesday, May 12.
Because your feedback is so crucially important, the HWCDSB has extended the ThoughtExchange until Wednesday, May 12.
We want to hear from you. Please share your experiences with us at https://my.thoughtexchange.com/scroll/9898 ...
